Teddie and I had a wonderful walk this morning. We used the app that Colyn turned me on to and I found a place, Potters Creek Trail, about ten minutes from the hotel in Belleville, Ontario we stayed in last night. It was easy to get to and we got an early start, about seven in the morning. The first part of the trail took us through an old orchard. The orchard hadn’t been maintained for a very long time, but there were still a lot of apples on the trees and a lot of apples on the trail, very small, about an inch in diameter. The smell of apples lingered in the
humid air throughout the first part of our walk; it was wonderfully aromatic.
Teddie loves to get out on a real trail. She just perks up, prances out in front, chasing squirrels and chipmunks. She likes to flush the birds hiding in the grass along the side of the trail. Jill Rose, on the other hand, observes about me that I don’t really take a walk as much as I go on a forced march. It’s also the way I drive on a trip, too. So, this whole ‘smell the roses’ thing is a bit contrary to my nature. I get on a road trip and I just want to go. I want to get from point-to-point in as little time as possible. Sometimes, I’ll drive 12-13 hours. But, in fairness to myself, when I started doing road trips there was no such thing as Google Maps and All Trails. When I was younger, there was no way for you to know where one could make a side trip, that is, unless some person, some local, might offer up one as an option. Or, at least a side trip that one might find of interest. Now, of course, with the advent of the internet and Google Maps, there’s no reason not to look for a side trip. Not only that, most of the side trips feature reviews. One gets to select from the best-of-the-best, or at least pick side trips that hold some interest.
